Salmon Arm Observer
On October 10, 1907 the first issue of the paper hit the streets. The main story was coverage of the Salmon Arm and Shuswap Lake Fair. Another story announced a public meeting to discuss formulation of a telephone system for the town. Publisher Rick Proznick says the paper still feels a responsibility as the paper of record in the community. "The staff are aware people will someday be reading the paper to get an idea of what life was like in our times," he says. "The paper acts as a snapshot of the week that was." The paper's commitment to keeping the community informed was rewarded with a first place finish in the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association General Excellence competition. The Observer is published Wednesdays. Observer staff also put out a free-distribution paper, The Shuswap Market News, each Friday.
