Contemporary School of Dance

Contemporary School of Dance

60 Bathurst Drive, Unit #18, Waterloo , ON
The Contemporary School of Dance (CSD) opened in September of 1997. The school began with two teachers and approximately seventy-five students. Through dedication and hard work, and with the help of wonderful teaching faculty, Christine Parker-Reid, the school's founder and director, has built one of the most reputable schools in the K-W area. Today, CSD has ten faculty providing approximately four hundred dancers of all ages with superb training in an energetic, nurturing environment. From September to June, our school offers regularly scheduled classes in various dance styles, including ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary and pilates. At the end of our dancing year, we mount a professional production, held at the Humanities Theatre at the University of Waterloo. We also offer session-based programs in fall, winter and spring for our adult students and highly successful Junior School programs, which include Toddler and Me and PreSchool classes. For our full year students, we offer progressive training with examination opportunities in ballet, jazz and tap and performance opportunities through our children’s dance companies. We do NOT enter competitions. All students receive quality dance instruction delivered by professional teachers who encourage a genuine sense of performance. With our expertise, we are able to encourage and support our students who would like to audition for professional dance schools or post-secondary dance institutions. We are proud to have had many students choose dance as a career. For most of our students, dance offers a fun and rewarding pursuit and is a great form of exercise. CSD prides itself on maintaining a high level of administrative service. We work diligently to ensure that parents are kept well informed of every aspect of their child’s dance program. Faculty members are always willing to speak with students or parents if they have any questions or concerns. CSD’s goal is to provide a welcoming, positive, caring atmosphere for all of our dancers. Regardless of age or ability, students will have the opportunity to explore the magic of movement, benefit from a healthy extracurricular activity, and gain an appreciation for the art of dance.

Strathyre Highland Dancers

Strathyre Highland Dancers

55 Erb St E. , Waterloo , ON
The Strathyre (strath’ ahy r) Highland Dancers have over 15 years of experience entertaining groups of all types and sizes. All of our dancers are trained through the Bartlett School of Highland Dance in Waterloo, Ontario under the tutelage of Debra (Bartlett) Reinhart. Highland dancing began in Scotland as an athletic event. The dances are very vigorous and demand good physical conditioning with long hours of practice to master the steps. Strathyre dancers are trained in practical and theoretical applications and many are provincial competitive Highland Games champions. Select dancers have successfully competed at Highland Scholarship Competitions internationally. All dancers are trained in strict accordance to the S.O.B.H.A. (Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing) guidelines. In addition to private venues, the Strathyre Highland Dancers perform on a volunteer basis at many community events throughout the year. As a result, our high school aged dancers receive community service hours to contribute toward earning their Secondary School Graduation Diploma. The Strathyre Highland Dancers’ repertoire includes the traditional Highland Fling and Sword Dance as well as Reels, Lilts, Hornpipes and the exciting Argyle Broadsword. The National dances of Scotland, performed by women, are also an important part of the show and the Aboyne costume, rather than the Highland kilt, is worn. In addition, each performance includes a brief explanation of the dances and costumes to add to the audience’s enjoyment.
