Our History The Flying Shingle (or Shingle) is the oldest continuously running newspaper on Gabriola Island BC – an island on the West Coast of Canada with a population of about 5000. Originating in 1972, the Flying Shingle was under the management of Owner/Editor/Publisher June Harrison until its sale in 2008. The Name We quote founder June Harrison: “Why 'The Flying Shingle'? The name was used after much discussions and banter! There were other not-so-suitable titles but they were turned down! The 'Flying Shingle' is derived from the tiny little 'fill-in' boat that would serve the Island when the Atrevida was broken or in getting fittings. It carried a grand total of four cars and about 12 people. It skimmed across the water at top speed and people at Whalebone and elsewhere started referring to it as 'The Shingle' and then 'The Flying Shingle'. Hence the naming of the paper which some old timers will still recall!”

Gabriola is the most accessible of the Gulf Islands with hourly ferry service from Nanaimo and float plane to Vancouver making it the choice for full and part time living.
